The 16-Bit Era Begins in Japan, and the Game Boy Wins Anyway

Nintendo launched the Super Famicom in Japan on 21 November 1990 alongside Super Mario World, and the first 300,000 units sold out within hours. But the year's best-selling hardware worldwide was not 16-bit at all: the Game Boy shipped roughly five million units in 1990, passing eight million cumulative by early 1991. Nintendo also took its NES catalogue on the road with the Nintendo World Championships, a twenty-nine-city competition built around a custom cartridge that became one of the most sought-after objects in the hobby.

Two Nintendos at Once

1990 is the year Nintendo ran two completely different businesses successfully at the same time, and the more impressive one was the less glamorous. The Super Famicom launch on 21 November was the event — 16-bit hardware, Super Mario World in the box, 300,000 units gone within hours, a demonstration of demand so total that it framed the entire coming console war. It is what the year is remembered for.

Meanwhile the Game Boy, a monochrome handheld already regarded as technically unambitious when it launched, shipped around five million units in 1990 and outsold every home console on earth. By early 1991 it had passed eight million cumulative. Nintendo had simultaneously proved that it could sell the most powerful thing it had ever made and the least powerful, and that the second was the larger business. The lesson — that hardware capability and commercial success are only loosely related — is one the industry has had to relearn roughly once a decade ever since.

The Championship Cartridge

The Nintendo World Championships began on 8 March and toured twenty-nine American cities, and its structure was a small piece of design brilliance. Competitors played a custom NES cartridge holding three games — Super Mario Bros., Rad Racer, and Tetris — and had exactly 6 minutes and 21 seconds to accumulate points across all three. The time limit turned a competition about skill into a competition about allocation: how long to spend on each game, when to cut losses, what a marginal second was worth.

The cartridges themselves outlived the event by a wide margin. Produced in tiny numbers and never sold at retail, they became among the most coveted objects in game collecting, with individual copies trading for sums that would have astonished anyone who competed in 1990. The Championships were conceived as a marketing tour for an ageing console at the exact moment Nintendo was preparing to replace it — and they accidentally created an artefact whose value derives entirely from that obsolescence.

"The first batch of 300,000 Super Famicom units sold out in hours."
