Overview

Loom (1990) is Brian Moriarty's adventure for Lucasfilm Games, in which Bobbin Threadbare solves puzzles by playing four-note tunes instead of using items.

Deep Dive

Bobbin plays four-note "drafts" on his distaff, learning them by watching objects with matching qualities. Some drafts can be reversed, though palindromic ones cannot. On Expert difficulty the notes are not labelled, so drafts must be played by ear.

Developer Story

Moriarty, formerly of Infocom, led the project. It came out for MS-DOS in 1990, with later Amiga, Atari ST, Mac, FM Towns and TurboGrafx-CD versions. It was a critical success but did not sell well enough to warrant sequels.

Did You Know?

  • Its music adapts Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake, arranged for MIDI by George Sanger.
  • Computer Gaming World gave it a Special Award for Artistic Achievement.
