Overview

Stunts (1990), also known as 4D Sports Driving, is a 3D racing game of loops, jumps and corkscrews, with a track editor and replays that kept a fan community racing for decades.

Deep Dive

Players race a lap of a stunt track — loops, jumps, slalom roads and corkscrews — either against the clock or against one of six opponents, choosing from 11 cars with automatic or manual gears. A track editor lets players build new courses or change existing ones, and races can be saved and replayed from four camera views.

Developer Story

Distinctive Software made the game, drawing on the arcade game Hard Drivin', and Broderbund released it for MS-DOS in October 1990. Fans kept sharing replays for years, and a yearly World Stunts Meeting was held in the mid-2000s.

Did You Know?

  • In Europe it was sold as 4D Sports Driving because Broderbund held the Stunts name.
  • Programmer Chris Taylor played the opponent Skid Vicious.
  • PC Gamer US ranked it the 22nd best computer game ever in 1994.
