Overview

Crystalis (1990) is SNK's post-apocalyptic NES action RPG, set in 2097, a century after a nuclear war, where four elemental swords fight enemies and clear the way.

Deep Dive

Played from above, it gives the hero swords of wind, fire, water and thunder, which serve as weapons and also open paths past obstacles. A fifth sword, Crystalis, waits in the final dungeon.

Developer Story

SNK released it in Japan in April 1990 and in North America that July. Critics praised its graphics, music and story but found the combat repetitive.
