Overview

Powermonger (1990) is Bullfrog's real-time strategy game on a 3D landscape, in which a captain conquers towns, feeds an army and sends orders that travel slowly to distant commanders.

Deep Dive

The player wins by conquering most or all of the towns on a map and killing rival captains. Food is the most important resource, and orders to subordinate captains arrive after a delay that grows with their distance from the player's own captain. The map's terrain is three-dimensional, with people and objects drawn as sprites, and cutting down too many trees can change the weather.

Developer Story

Peter Molyneux, Glenn Corpes and Kevin Donkin designed the game on an engine derived from Populous, and EA released it for the Amiga and Atari ST in October 1990. A World War I Edition expansion followed in 1991.
