Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe

1990 · Sports · Amiga / Atari ST

Overview

Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (1990) is the Bitmap Brothers' violent future sport, a blend of handball and ice hockey in which the underdog team Brutal Deluxe fights its way up the league.

Deep Dive

Set in 2105, the game follows Brutal Deluxe, a new team entering a violent sport that mixes handball and ice hockey. Nine players a side compete in matches of 180 seconds. A goal is worth 10 points, raised to 15 or 20 by lighting the multiplier ramps on the walls, and floor and wall targets give bonuses — but so does injuring an opponent, who is replaced from a bench of three substitutes. The game offers knockout, cup, league, practice and two-player modes.

Developer Story

Designed by Eric Matthews, programmed by Robert Trevellyan and drawn by Daniel Malone, Speedball 2 was released in 1990 for the Amiga and Atari ST as the sequel to 1988's Speedball. It was converted to the Mega Drive, Master System, Game Boy and Atari Jaguar, among others, and remade several times.
