Ultima VI: The False Prophet

1990 · RPG · PC/DOS

Overview

Ultima VI (1990) is Richard Garriott's role-playing game that put all of Britannia on one seamless map and turned a war against invading gargoyles into a search for peace.

Deep Dive

The Avatar is rescued from a sacrificial altar by Shamino, Dupre and Iolo and sets out to retake the shrines the gargoyles have seized. Later the story shows the war from the gargoyles' side. Towns sit on one 1024×1024 tile map instead of separate maps, dungeons are seen from above rather than in first person, and commands are reduced to ten icons for the mouse.

Developer Story

Garriott designed it and produced it with Warren Spector at Origin. It supported VGA, a mouse and sound cards for music, though sound effects still came through the PC speaker. It ended the "Age of Enlightenment" trilogy and was ported to computers from the Commodore 64 to the X68000 and to the Super NES.

Did You Know?

  • It sold fewer than 100,000 copies in the United States in 1990.
  • Computer Gaming World added it to its Hall of Fame in 1992.
