Mega Man Legends

1997 · Action-Adventure · PlayStation

Overview

Mega Man Legends (1997) is Capcom's 3D action-adventure reinvention of Mega Man, in which Mega Man Volnutt explores ruins on a flooded Earth.

Deep Dive

On a flooded Earth, Diggers explore ancient ruins for refractors that produce energy. Mega Man Volnutt crash-lands on Kattelox Island, where the Bonne family of pirates are after a legendary treasure. Unlike the platforming of the original series, the game is set in 3D worlds, with ledge climbing and lock-on targeting. Refractor shards are sold for Zenny, the Buster's power depends on the parts equipped, and Roll can build new parts and special weapons.

Developer Story

Producer Keiji Inafune wanted a Mega Man unlike the earlier games, mixing action, role-playing and adventure. Capcom released it in Japan on 18 December 1997 and North America in September 1998. A planned Mega Man Legends 3 was cancelled.

Did You Know?

  • It was shown at E3 1997 as Mega Man Neo.
  • Keiji Inafune said it did not sell well, arriving years before sandbox games became popular.
