Ghosts 'n Goblins

1984 · Platform / Action · Arcade

Overview

Ghosts 'n Goblins (1984) is Capcom's notoriously hard platformer: Arthur fights demons to rescue the princess, losing his armour after one hit.

Deep Dive

Sir Arthur fights through graveyards, forests and castles full of zombies, demons and dragons to rescue the princess. One hit strips his armour and leaves him in his boxer shorts; a second kills him. Weapons swap as players collect them, some far worse than others. Designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, it is famously difficult — and finishing it once reveals that the victory was a trick, sending the player back to beat the whole game a second time for the real ending.

Developer Story

Ghosts 'n Goblins was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara at Capcom and released in 1984. It was notorious for its extreme difficulty and for requiring players to complete the game twice — finishing once revealed the game was an illusion, and the true ending required a second complete playthrough. The image of Arthur losing his armour and continuing in heart-patterned boxer shorts became iconic.
