1997 · Action-Adventure · PlayStation

Overview

Alundra (1997) is Matrix Software's puzzle-heavy action-adventure, a spiritual sequel to Landstalker, in which a dream-walking elf enters the nightmares killing a village's people.

Deep Dive

The elf Alundra, a silent hero who can enter people's dreams, is shipwrecked near the village of Inoa, whose people are being killed by nightmares. The source is the demon Melzas, disguised as a god. The game is played from above, with heavy puzzle-solving, real-time combat and platforming, and each dream level has a twist drawn from the dreamer's personality.

Developer Story

Yasuhiro Ohori directed the game at Matrix Software, with music by Kōhei Tanaka. It began as an action RPG before the PlayStation launched and took three years to finish. Sony released it in Japan on 11 April 1997, and Working Designs brought it to North America in January 1998.
