Overview
Tempest 2000 (1994) is Jeff Minter's Jaguar remake of Atari's Tempest, with 100 webs, new power-ups and a techno soundtrack, and one of the console's most acclaimed games.
Deep Dive
Players shoot down a 100-level series of webs, adding power-ups such as the Particle Laser, Jump and an AI Droid, and Warp tokens that open bonus stages. Clearing all 100 unlocks Beastly Mode, and the game also offers Traditional Tempest, Tempest Plus and a two-player duel.
Developer Story
Minter volunteered for the project and made it in Wales, and Atari released it in April 1994. It was Electronic Gaming Monthly's Best Jaguar Game of 1994 and the Jaguar's second best seller after Alien vs Predator, with later PC, PlayStation and Saturn versions.
Did You Know?
- Atari never released the rotary controller the game supported, a common complaint.
