Attack of the Mutant Camels

1983 · Horizontal Shooter · Commodore 64

Overview

Attack of the Mutant Camels (1983) is Jeff Minter's Commodore 64 shooter in which a small jet must bring down giant yellow camels before they reach its base.

Deep Dive

The camels march across a scrolling landscape spitting fireballs, and if one reaches the base the game is over. Clearing a wave leads to a "hyperspace" stage of dodging fast missiles, then a slightly harder herd. The set-up follows Atari's 1982 The Empire Strikes Back, with camels standing in for the AT-AT walkers.

Developer Story

Minter designed it for Llamasoft on the Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit computers. Commodore User called it skilfully designed, and Home Computing Weekly praised the sound and graphics but thought it perhaps a little too difficult. The source for an unreleased Konix version was published on GitHub in 2012.
