Overview

SonSon (1984) is Capcom's auto-scrolling arcade game loosely based on Journey to the West, starring a monkey boy patterned after Sun Wukong, with a pig partner for a second player.

Deep Dive

The screen scrolls on its own across six rows of platforms, and the player fires energy blasts from a fighting staff while dodging enemies, which cost a life on contact. Fruit earns points, and a cloud grants extra lives and brief invincibility. The hero is a monkey boy modelled on Sun Wukong, and a second player can join as TonTon, based on Zhu Bajie.

Developer Story

Yoshiki Okamoto directed the game and drew its art, Hirokazu Fujinaka programmed it, and Ayako Mori and Tamayo Kawamoto composed the music. Capcom released it in July 1984, and Micronics made a Famicom version in 1986.
