Overview

Syndicate (1993) is Bullfrog's isometric real-time tactics game, in which a squad of four cyborg agents carries out assassination, rescue and persuasion missions for a megacorporation in a cyberpunk 2096.

Deep Dive

In 2096 megacorporations have replaced governments, and the player sends teams of up to four cyborg agents on missions of assassination, rescue and "persuasion". The Persuadertron recruits targets and civilians to follow the squad. Taxes from conquered territories pay for research into better weapons, from pistols and Uzis to miniguns and the Gauss gun, but taxing too heavily can provoke a revolt that forces the mission to be replayed.

Developer Story

Sean Cooper designed and programmed the game, with Peter Molyneux producing and Russell Shaw composing. EA released it for the Amiga and MS-DOS in the UK on 2 July 1993, followed by an expansion, American Revolt, the same year. Syndicate Wars followed in 1996.

Did You Know?

  • PC Gamer UK ranked it the 11th best computer game of all time in 1994.
  • Computer Gaming World criticised its lack of multiplayer and its repetitive missions.
