Overview

Dungeon Keeper (1997) is Bullfrog's dungeon-management game, in which the player plays the villain, building a lair, recruiting monsters and fending off invading heroes. It was Peter Molyneux's last project at Bullfrog.

Deep Dive

The player builds and runs an underground dungeon, recruiting creatures and defending the lair against invading heroes, the last of whom is the Avatar. Imps dig the tunnels and mine the gold, and the player's Hand picks up, slaps and drops creatures, or possesses one. Up to four players can compete by modem or LAN.

Developer Story

Work began in November 1994 and took about two and a half years, with Peter Molyneux as designer and producer. Molyneux left Bullfrog in July 1997 to found Lionhead Studios, and the game was released at the end of June. It sold 700,000 copies worldwide by 2003, and Dungeon Keeper 2 followed in 1999.
