Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge

1991 · Point-and-Click Adventure · PC

Overview

Monkey Island 2 (1991) is Ron Gilbert's sequel to The Secret of Monkey Island, the first LucasArts game with the iMUSE adaptive music system, remembered for its divisive ending.

Deep Dive

Guybrush Threepwood hunts for the treasure of Big Whoop while the zombie pirate LeChuck hunts him. Players could pick the full game or a "Lite" mode with many puzzles removed. The ending, in which LeChuck is revealed as Guybrush's brother Chuckie, was meant as a deliberately provocative metaphor and split players.

Developer Story

Gilbert directed and designed it, writing with Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman. Work began shortly after the first game's October 1990 release and took about a year. It came out in December 1991 on six floppy disks; the Amiga version followed in 1992 on eleven. It was a critical success but a commercial disappointment.

Did You Know?

  • Gilbert said five scenes were cut to fit the game on floppy disks.
  • iMUSE was co-designed by Michael Land and Peter McConnell.
