Overview

Mikie (1984) is Konami's school maze game, in which a student dodges staff while collecting hearts that spell out a letter from his girlfriend, to chiptune versions of Beatles songs.

Deep Dive

Mikie runs through classrooms and other parts of the school picking up hearts while staff chase him. He can head-butt them or slam doors in their faces. A later revision, High School Graffiti Mikie, toned it down: Mikie shouts to stun enemies instead, and they speed up after each loop.

Developer Story

Konami released it in Japan in September 1984, with Centuri publishing in North America. Imagine Software ported it to the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC, BBC Micro and Electron, and Crash gave it a Smash award.

Did You Know?

  • In Japan it was set in an office and titled Shinnyū Shain Tōru-kun, because of concerns about school violence.
  • Its music includes versions of "A Hard Day's Night" and "Twist and Shout".
