Overview

Thunder Blade (1987) is Sega's helicopter gunship shooter, alternating between overhead stages and behind-the-craft 3D flight.

Deep Dive

Thunder Blade pilots an attack helicopter against tanks, gunships and fortresses. Each stage begins viewed from above and then switches to a third-person view behind the helicopter as it weaves between skyscrapers and canyons. It used Sega's sprite-scaling hardware for its 3D sections, and a deluxe cabinet moved the seat with the flight stick. It was part of Sega's run of high-end arcade spectacles in the late 1980s.

Developer Story

Thunder Blade was developed by Sega in 1987. The helicopter combat game alternated between overhead and third-person behind-the-craft perspectives, using Sega's Super Scaler hardware for smooth sprite scaling. The hydraulic cabinet tilted the joystick platform rather than the entire seat. Thunder Blade was part of Sega's late-1980s push to dominate the high-end arcade market.

Did You Know?

  • Thunder Blade switched between overhead and third-person perspectives within the same game — a technical achievement in 1987.
  • The hydraulic joystick — rather than a full motion cabinet — was Sega's cost-reduced approach to simulated flight.
  • Both aircraft and ground enemies required different attack approaches, forcing players to switch mental models between phases.
  • Sega's Super Scaler hardware family — used across Space Harrier, Out Run, After Burner, and Thunder Blade — was the most capable sprite-scaling system of the era.
