Sweet Home

1989 · RPG · NES / Famicom

Overview

Sweet Home (1989) is Tokuro Fujiwara's Famicom horror role-playing game, loosely based on the film of the same name, and the main inspiration for Resident Evil.

Deep Dive

Five characters explore alone or in groups of two or three. Each carries an item the others need to finish — a camera, lighter, medical kit, lockpick or vacuum cleaner — and items can be dropped and picked up. A character who dies is gone for good, and the five endings depend on how many survive.

Developer Story

Fujiwara directed it. Juzo Itami, who produced the film, also produced the game, and the film's director, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, supervised it. The game's plot departs from the film's.

Did You Know?

  • Capcom no longer held the Sweet Home licence when it made Resident Evil, so it created a new setting.
  • It was released only in Japan, on 15 December 1989.
