Dino Crisis

1999 · Survival Horror · PlayStation

Overview

Dino Crisis (1999) is Shinji Mikami's "panic horror" game, in which agent Regina fights dinosaurs on Ibis Island in real-time 3D environments rather than Resident Evil's pre-rendered backgrounds.

Deep Dive

Agent Regina and her team investigate Ibis Island, where Dr. Edward Kirk's secret project has pulled dinosaurs into the present through a rift in spacetime. Unlike Resident Evil, the game draws its environments in real-time 3D. Capcom marketed it as "panic horror", with faster, more intelligent dinosaurs as enemies. Locked doors open with D.D.K. codes, colour-coded emergency boxes hold supplies, Hemostats and Med Paks treat wounds, and "DANGER" moments call for quick button presses.

Developer Story

Shinji Mikami directed and produced it at Capcom Production Studio 4. It was released in Japan on 1 July 1999 and North America in September, and the PlayStation version sold about 2.4 million copies. Dino Crisis 2 followed in 2000.
