Sabre Wulf

1984 · Action-Adventure · ZX Spectrum

Overview

Ultimate Play the Game's 1984 Spectrum jungle maze, where Sabreman hunts for amulet pieces across 256 screens with no instructions at all — the start of his adventures.

Deep Dive

Sabre Wulf was released by the British developer Ultimate Play the Game for the ZX Spectrum in 1984. The player guides Sabreman, in his pith helmet, through a two-dimensional jungle maze, collecting the four pieces of an amulet needed to get past the guardian at the exit. The maze covers 256 connected screens, and Sabreman moves from one to the next by walking off the edge. Each screen is crowded with colourful plants, randomly appearing creatures and occasional items. In keeping with Ultimate's mystique, the game gives no explicit instructions, leaving players to work out what to do by trial and error.

Developer Story

Sabre Wulf was created by Tim and Chris Stamper at Ultimate Play the Game in 1984, released a few months before Knight Lore. The jungle maze adventure starred Sabreman, who became the studio's recurring protagonist. Ultimate Play the Game was the most prestigious ZX Spectrum developer of its era, able to sell its games on reputation alone.

Did You Know?

  • Sabre Wulf launched at £9.95, well above the usual Spectrum price, in a large box — a bet on Ultimate's reputation that paid off.
  • Sabreman, the protagonist, appeared in multiple Ultimate games: Sabre Wulf, Underwurlde, Knight Lore, and Gunfright.
  • The jungle maze was one of the largest game worlds on the ZX Spectrum, with hundreds of screens and a procedurally respawning enemy.
