Prince of Persia 2: The Shadow and the Flame

1993 · Platform · PC/DOS

Overview

Prince of Persia 2 (1993) is Jordan Mechner's sequel, with bigger fights, richer scenery and a 75-minute limit, ending on a cliffhanger that was never resolved.

Deep Dive

Eleven days after the first game, Jaffar takes the throne disguised as the Prince and puts a death spell on the Princess. The Prince's journey takes him to an island and the ruins of Basra, where he learns of his royal birth, separates his shadow from his body and claims a magic flame. Lives are unlimited, but time lost cannot be won back except by reloading a save.

Developer Story

Mechner designed it but, unlike the original, did not program it. Broderbund released it for MS-DOS in May 1993, and it had sold 750,000 copies by 2000. A 1996 Super NES port by Titus left out several levels, including the last.

Did You Know?

  • Computer Gaming World named it Action Game of the Year in 1994.
  • Mechner said the planned sequel to resolve its cliffhanger never came.
