Bionic Commando

1987 · Action / Platform · Arcade

Overview

Bionic Commando (1987) is Capcom's arcade action game in which the hero cannot jump, swinging across gaps with an extendable bionic arm instead.

Deep Dive

Bionic Commando's soldier has no jump button. Instead he fires a grappling arm diagonally or straight up to latch onto platforms and ledges, swinging and climbing through the vertical stages of an enemy base while shooting soldiers. Mastering the arm's reach and swing is the whole game. Designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, it was followed by a very different NES version with a longer story and a map of areas to visit.

Developer Story

Bionic Commando was designed by Tokuro Fujiwara at Capcom in 1987. The central innovation was removing the ability to jump — the soldier used a bionic arm with a grappling hook to swing across gaps. This forced entirely new spatial thinking compared to conventional platformers. A reworked NES version followed in 1988 with a longer story.

Did You Know?

  • Bionic Commando removed the ability to jump entirely — a deliberate design choice that forced players to rethink every traversal challenge.
  • The grappling arm could grab ledges, enemies, and even bullets in some cases — mastering its physics was the whole game.
  • The later Famicom/NES version, a very different game, made a resurrected Hitler its final villain — renamed 'Master-D' for Western releases.
  • The NES version added radio conversations and a map of areas to visit, turning the arcade game into a longer adventure.
