Galaxy Force II

1988 · Rail Shooter · Arcade

Overview

Galaxy Force II (1988) is Sega's 3D space shooter, flying through planets and fortresses on Super Scaler hardware, some cabinets rotating the player.

Deep Dive

Galaxy Force II flies a starfighter into the screen across planet surfaces and into enemy fortresses, locking on to multiple targets and firing homing missiles while managing a draining energy supply. Sega's sprite-scaling hardware pushed large numbers of scaled objects to create a convincing sense of 3D speed. It was offered in a motion cabinet that could turn the seated player, one of the most elaborate machines of its time — and correspondingly rare in arcades.

Developer Story

Galaxy Force II was developed by Sega in 1988. The third-person rail shooter used Sega's most advanced scaling hardware to render a vast three-dimensional tunnel at high speed. The motion-simulator cabinet version rotated 360 degrees. It was one of the most technically impressive arcade games of 1988, though its difficulty and the cabinet's mechanical complexity limited its commercial reach.

Did You Know?

  • The Galaxy Force II cabinet could rotate completely — full 360-degree motion in sync with the on-screen action.
  • The scaling hardware processed more sprites per frame than almost any other 1988 arcade game.
  • The game's cost and mechanical complexity made it rare in arcades — a paradox where the most impressive games were seen by the fewest players.
