Space Harrier

1985 · Rail Shooter · Arcade

Overview

Space Harrier (1985) is Yu Suzuki's pseudo-3D rail shooter for Sega, flying a jet-powered hero at speed through surreal landscapes on Super Scaler hardware.

Deep Dive

Space Harrier's hero runs and flies into the screen through the Fantasy Zone, shooting dragons, mammoths and geometric oddities while dodging pillars and trees rushing past. Sega's Super Scaler hardware resized sprites fast enough to create a convincing sense of 3D speed, and a deluxe sit-down cabinet moved with the controls. Yu Suzuki followed it with Out Run and After Burner, a run of spectacular arcade games that defined Sega in the late 1980s.

Developer Story

Space Harrier was designed by Yu Suzuki at Sega in 1985. Suzuki used Sega's Super Scaler hardware — which could scale sprites rapidly to simulate 3D movement — to create a pseudo-3D rail shooter that ran at a smooth framerate. The sensation of flying at high speed through a fantastic landscape was unlike anything in arcades before it. Suzuki followed Space Harrier with OutRun and After Burner, creating a trilogy of Sega 'super-scaler' spectaculars.
