Overview

Wrecking Crew (1984) is Nintendo's demolition puzzle game, in which Mario, too weighed down by his hammer to jump, must knock down every target in 100 levels.

Deep Dive

Mario (or Luigi for a second player in the arcade) smashes every target object in each level, while the foreman Spike knocks things down to get in his way. A level editor lets players build up to four levels of their own.

Developer Story

Satoru Okada directed it under producer Gunpei Yokoi, with Yoshio Sakamoto and Makoto Kanoh designing and Hirokazu Tanaka composing. VS. Wrecking Crew came to arcades in July 1984, followed by the single-player Famicom version in 1985.

Did You Know?

  • Custom levels could only be saved with the Famicom Data Recorder, sold only in Japan.
  • It was a North American launch title for the NES in October 1985.
