Strider

1989 · Action / Platform · Arcade

Overview

Strider (1989) is Capcom's arcade hack and slash, in which the ninja Hiryu climbs walls and ceilings and cuts through a dystopian 2048 with a plasma sword.

Deep Dive

Hiryu slashes with his plasma sword, cartwheels, slides under obstacles and climbs walls and ceilings with a hook. Robot companions called options help him through five stages. Junko Tamiya's music shifts with each stage and situation.

Developer Story

Kouichi Yotsui directed it and co-designed it with Tokuro Fujiwara and Shinichi Yoshimoto, on Capcom's CP System board. It was a UK best-seller for three months in early 1989. Most home versions cut its graphics and music.

Did You Know?

  • Capcom and the manga studio Moto Kikaku planned it alongside a Strider Hiryu manga and an NES game; the three were made separately.
  • The Genesis version won Electronic Gaming Monthly's 1990 Game of the Year.
