Overview

Speedball (1988) is the Bitmap Brothers' violent future sport: two armoured teams fight to score in a steel arena, with coins to spend on upgrades.

Deep Dive

Speedball pits two teams of armoured players against each other in a closed metal arena, throwing a steel ball into the opposing goal by whatever means necessary — tackles, punches and all. Coins collected on the pitch buy upgrades and bribes between matches. Its invented sport and brutal tone drew in players who did not usually play sports games, and its sequel, Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe, became one of the most admired Amiga games.

Developer Story

Speedball was developed by the Bitmap Brothers in 1988. A violent futuristic sport played by armoured teams in a steel arena, Speedball featured heavy metal gameplay despite the studio's typically sleek aesthetic. The sequel Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe (1990) is considered one of the finest sports games ever made for the Amiga.

Did You Know?

  • Speedball's rules were deliberately obscure — the sport felt plausibly real while being completely invented.
  • The sequel Speedball 2: Brutal Deluxe is regularly cited in "greatest Amiga games" lists alongside Sensible Soccer and Cannon Fodder.
  • The metal arena aesthetic was a departure from the Bitmap Brothers' usual polished style — more industrial, more brutal.
  • Speedball attracted an audience that rarely played sports games, bridging action gaming and sports through the science fiction setting.
