1987 · Point-and-Click Adventure · Macintosh
Shadowgate (1987) is ICOM Simulations' point-and-click adventure, in which a torch must always be kept burning and most wrong moves end in a grisly death.
Torches are limited and the player must keep one lit, so they work as a time limit. Many puzzles are trial and error, and most wrong actions are fatal, which makes frequent saving necessary.
ICOM made it for the Macintosh in black and white in 1987, followed by colour versions for the Amiga and Atari ST. Kemco brought it to the NES in 1989, and remakes followed on the Game Boy Color in 1999 and Windows in 2014.
