Overview

Resident Evil 2 (1998) is Capcom's two-disc sequel directed by Hideki Kamiya, in which rookie cop Leon Kennedy and student Claire Redfield escape a zombie-filled Raccoon City.

Deep Dive

Set two months after the first game, it gives Leon and Claire separate scenarios, linked by the "Zapping System", for four playthroughs in all. It keeps the series' tank controls and fixed camera angles.

Developer Story

Work began in early 1996 with a team of 45 to 50. An earlier version, known as Resident Evil 1.5, was scrapped when 60–80% complete and the game was redesigned. Kamiya directed, Shinji Mikami produced and Noboru Sugimura wrote it. It sold over 6 million copies across all platforms.

Did You Know?

  • The PlayStation version sold 4.96 million copies, the series' best-selling release on a single platform.
  • Next Generation called it "the must-own title of the year".
