1999 · Fighting · Nintendo 64
Super Smash Bros. (1999) is Masahiro Sakurai's Nintendo 64 crossover fighter, in which twelve Nintendo characters try to knock each other off the stage rather than drain a health bar.
Every hit raises a fighter's damage percentage, and the higher it climbs, the farther attacks send them. Up to four players fight across nine stages. Eight characters are available from the start and four more can be unlocked.
Sakurai pitched it to Iwata as Dragon King: The Fighting Game and built a prototype in September 1997 without telling Nintendo, showing it at the end of the year. Nintendo approved it, and HAL developed it. It sold over five million copies by 2001.
