Raid on Bungeling Bay

1984 · Shooter · Commodore 64 / Multiple

Overview

Raid on Bungeling Bay (1984) is Will Wright's helicopter shooter whose map editor became the start of SimCity.

Deep Dive

A helicopter launched from an aircraft carrier must bomb six factories spread across a group of islands, fighting off gun turrets, fighter jets, guided missiles and a battleship, and reloading at a hidden island. The factories grow stronger as time passes, so the player has to strike quickly.

Developer Story

Will Wright designed the game and programmed the Commodore 64 version, which Broderbund released in December 1984. Hudson Soft made the Famicom version (1985), Nintendo released an arcade version in Japan, and Broderbund published the NES version in North America in 1987.

  • Wright built a map editor for the game as a personal project, and it grew into City Planner and then SimCity (1989).
  • The Commodore 64 version sold 20,000 to 30,000 copies in America, while Hudson's Famicom version sold about a million in Japan.
