Overview

Mappy (1983) is Namco's arcade game in which a police mouse bounces on trampolines through a mansion of cats to recover stolen goods.

Deep Dive

Mappy, a police mouse, must recover ten stolen items, in five pairs, from a mansion where a gang of cats led by Goro is hiding out. He moves between floors on trampolines, which break after four bounces in a row, and can open doors to release microwaves that sweep them away. Collecting matching pairs in a row multiplies the points, up to six times, and a bonus balloon round appears from time to time.

Developer Story

Namco released Mappy in Japan in March 1983, and Bally Midway distributed it in North America the following month. Hiroshi Ono drew the graphics and Nobuyuki Ohnogi composed the music. Sequels included Hopping Mappy (1986) and Mappy-Land on the Famicom.

Did You Know?

  • Its name probably comes from mappo, mildly derogatory Japanese slang for a policeman.
  • Its board was a revision of the Super Pac-Man hardware with added horizontal scrolling.
