Overview

Omega Boost (1999) is Polyphony Digital's first game and its only non-racing title, a PlayStation mecha shooter produced by Kazunori Yamauchi with mecha designs by Shoji Kawamori.

Deep Dive

The player's mech fights fixed waves of enemies across nine levels. Leveling up unlocks the Viper Boost ability, and using it adds "Pixy" to the player's final ranking title.

Developer Story

Yasushi Taki and Zaika Tei directed it, and Yuji Yasuhara, who had worked on Panzer Dragoon Zwei, designed and programmed it. It came out in Japan in April 1999 and worldwide that September, averaging 73% on GameRankings.

Did You Know?

  • Some reviewers thought nine levels made it too short.
  • Next Generation gave it 2 out of 5, calling it "competent, but totally uninspired".
