1997 · Puzzle · PlayStation

Overview

I.Q.: Intelligent Qube (1997) is a PlayStation puzzle game, known as Kurushi in Europe, in which the player clears rows of giant rolling cubes and is graded with an IQ score.

Deep Dive

The player runs about on a platform as rows of cubes roll towards them, marking a square and triggering it as a cube rolls over to capture it. Grey cubes should be captured, green advantage cubes clear a 3×3 area around them when triggered, and black forbidden cubes must be allowed to fall off the edge. Capturing a forbidden cube costs a row of the platform. At the end the score is turned into an IQ rating between 0 and 999.

Developer Story

Kenji Sawaguchi directed the game at G-Artists, with Masahiko Sato as designer and Takayuki Hattori composing. Sony released it in Japan on 31 January 1997, and it sold nearly 750,000 copies there by the end of the year. I.Q. Final followed on the PlayStation.
