1993 · Horizontal Shooter · Arcade

Overview

In the Hunt (1993) is Irem's submarine shooter, whose designers went on to found Nazca and create Metal Slug.

Deep Dive

The player steers the submarine Granvia freely, as the screen does not scroll by itself. Forward missiles destroy most enemies in one hit, and missiles fired upward bring down helicopters and planes. Some enemies drop a machine gun, a wave cannon or a spread shot, and there are several endings.

Developer Story

Kazuma Kujo designed it, with art by Akio Oyabu, on Irem's M-92 board. Reviewers have compared it to Metal Slug and R-Type. PlayStation and Saturn versions came in 1995–96, and it has a cult following in Japan.

Did You Know?

  • Its Japanese title, Kaitei Daisensō, means Undersea War.
  • A Super NES version was playable at CES 1994 but never released.
