Image Fight (1988) is Irem's demanding vertical shooter: a combat simulation where poor performance sends the pilot through penalty stages.
Image Fight frames its vertical-scrolling missions as a training simulation. Players collect pods that attach to the ship and fire in different directions, and can switch the ship's speed. Five simulation stages test accuracy, and failing to destroy enough enemies sends the pilot to a punishing penalty stage before the real battle. From the studio behind R-Type, it is aimed at players who want a severe challenge.
Image Fight was developed by Irem in 1988. The vertical-scrolling shooter was notable for its extreme difficulty and an unusual penalty system — playing poorly in the main stages forced players through "penalty stages" designed to be even harder. The game was designed for players who found other shooters too easy.
