Final Fight

1989 · Beat 'em up · Arcade

Overview

Capcom's 1989 arcade brawler set in Metro City, in which Mayor Mike Haggar, Cody and Guy fight the Mad Gear gang — the game that set the template for the scrolling beat 'em up.

Deep Dive

Final Fight was released in arcades by Capcom in 1989. It is set in Metro City, a crime-ridden city later tied into the Street Fighter universe, where the Mad Gear gang has kidnapped the mayor's daughter. Mayor Mike Haggar, a former wrestler, sets out to rescue her with her boyfriend Cody and his friend Guy. Up to two players fight through side-scrolling streets, subways and factories against waves of gang members, using punches, throws and weapons picked up along the way. Its large, detailed characters and satisfying combat made it the defining beat 'em up of its generation, and it began a series that had sold 3.2 million units by June 2023.

Developer Story

Final Fight was designed by Akira Nishitani and Akira Yasuda (Akiman) at Capcom in 1989. Originally conceived as Street Fighter '89 — a sequel to Street Fighter — the game evolved into its own IP during development. Mayor Mike Haggar, his daughter Jessica, and her boyfriend Cody fought through six stages of Metro City to rescue Jessica from the Mad Gear gang. Final Fight became the definitive beat-em-up of its era.

Did You Know?

  • Final Fight was originally planned as Street Fighter '89 — it became a separate IP mid-development when the design moved away from one-on-one combat.
  • Haggar pile-driving enemies while wearing his suit became one of gaming's most iconic images — a politician who solved problems with his body.
  • The Super Nintendo port controversially removed the two-player co-op mode and a playable character — Guy was absent from the initial SNES release.
  • Poison, a female enemy in the original, became the subject of decades-long debate about her canonical gender — Capcom has given deliberately inconsistent answers.
  • Final Fight launched a series that continued through three numbered sequels and influenced every beat-em-up of the 1990s.
