Overview

Colony Wars (1997) is Psygnosis's PlayStation space combat game, in which a pilot of the rebel League of Free Worlds fights the Earth Navy through a branching campaign with several endings.

Deep Dive

The rebel League of Free Worlds, led by the Father, fights the Earth Navy of the Tzar's empire for control of the Sol system's network of warpholes. The player flies one of seven League starfighters through missions grouped into acts of three, and the campaign branches according to how well each mission goes, leading to multiple endings.

Developer Story

Mike Ellis designed the game and co-wrote it with Damon Fairclough, with music by Tim Wright. Psygnosis released it in November 1997, and it sold more than 150,000 copies in the US. Colony Wars: Vengeance followed in 1998 and Red Sun in 2000.

Did You Know?

  • The developers originally planned to let players choose between the League and the Earth Empire.
  • The mission tree was designed to hide mission failure.
  • Edge dismissed it as "little more than a 3D interpretation of Asteroids", while IGN gave it 9.3.
