Overview

Um Jammer Lammy (1999) is NanaOn-Sha's follow-up to PaRappa the Rapper, in which a shy guitarist plays her way through a day of mishaps to reach her band's first concert.

Deep Dive

Lammy, a shy left-handed guitarist who leads the band MilkCan, must reach her band's first concert on time despite a run of mishaps. She feels confident only with a guitar in her hands, real or imagined. As in PaRappa, the player trades call-and-response lines with a teacher, either following the prompts or freestyling, and ranks range from Awful up to Fever. Co-op and versus modes unlock after clearing levels, and PaRappa gets his own solo mode once Lammy's story is done.

Developer Story

Masaya Matsuura designed the game and composed its music, with art by Rodney Alan Greenblat. Sony released it in Japan on 18 March 1999 and North America in August. It won the Interactive Achievement Award for Outstanding Achievement in Original Music Composition.

Did You Know?

  • An arcade version with a guitar controller, Um Jammer Lammy NOW!, was released in Japan.
  • GameRevolution called its story "the most obtuse, disjointed, drug-induced mess of a story that has ever been conceived, period."
