Overview

Dragon Spirit (1987) is Namco's fantasy vertical shooter: fly a dragon breathing fire at air enemies and bombs at ground targets, growing extra heads.

Deep Dive

Dragon Spirit swaps the usual spaceship for a blue dragon. Fire breath hits flying enemies while a separate attack targets creatures and structures on the ground, the dual-target idea familiar from Namco's Xevious. Power-up eggs let the dragon grow up to three heads for a wider spread of fire, or shrink it when it takes damage. Its fantasy landscapes gave the vertical shooter a fresh look in 1987.

Developer Story

Dragon Spirit was developed by Namco in 1987. Players controlled a dragon rather than a spacecraft — a fantasy setting that gave the vertical shooter a different visual language. The dragon could breathe fire at ground targets and a separate breath weapon at air targets, mirroring Xevious's dual targeting. Power-ups evolved the dragon's appearance and abilities, with multiple head growth stages providing wider fire coverage.

Did You Know?

  • Dragon Spirit was one of the first shooters to use a fantasy setting — replacing spacecraft with a dragon gave the genre fresh visual vocabulary.
  • The dragon's fire evolved with power-ups — growing additional heads increased the width of the fire breath attack.
  • Ground enemies and aerial enemies required different fire types, creating simultaneous dual-target management.
