Vulgus

1984 · Vertical Shooter · Arcade

Overview

Vulgus (1984) is Capcom's first arcade game, a vertical shooter designed by Tokuro Fujiwara, which introduced the Yashichi later used as a power-up across Capcom's games.

Deep Dive

The player shoots down waves of enemies with an unlimited main gun and a limited supply of bombs, picking up "Pow" icons to restock. There are no separate levels: the game loops with rising difficulty until the last life is lost. One enemy, the Yashichi, later returned as a power-up in other Capcom games.

Developer Story

Tokuro Fujiwara designed the game and Ayako Mori composed the music. Capcom released it in Japan in May 1984, with SNK publishing it abroad, and it was among Japan's most popular arcade games that June.

Did You Know?

  • Capcom later gave the game away as freeware.
  • An NES follow-up, Titan Warriors, originally called Neo Vulgus, was never released.
