1998 · Action RPG · PlayStation

Overview

Brave Fencer Musashi (1998) is Square's 3D action RPG, in which a young swordsman summoned to another world must stay rested — or fall asleep on his feet — while defending the Allucaneet Kingdom.

Deep Dive

Musashi, a young swordsman, is summoned to a parallel world to defend the Allucaneet Kingdom from the Thirstquencher Empire, and searches for the Five Scrolls that strengthen his sword Lumina. Combat is in real time in 3D, and the game runs on a day-night cycle: Musashi tires over time and must rest, or he may fall asleep. His second sword, Fusion, performs combos and absorbs Bincho energy.

Developer Story

Yoichi Yoshimoto directed the game, Tetsuya Nomura designed the characters and Tsuyoshi Sekito composed the music. Square released it in Japan on 16 July 1998, where it sold about 648,803 copies that year, and in North America that November. Musashi: Samurai Legend followed on the PS2 in 2005.
