Overview

Bust a Groove (1998) is Metro's PlayStation dance game, in which rival dancers match button prompts to the beat and knock each other off rhythm.

Deep Dive

Players press direction and button prompts on the beat, and chaining eight moves opens up more complex, higher-scoring routines. Rivals can fire "Jammer" attacks, dodged with a somersault. Ten dancers, including Heat, Frida and Hamm, each have their own song, with four more hidden.

Developer Story

Metro developed it, and Enix released it in Japan in January 1998, with 989 Studios and Sony handling the West. Next Generation gave it four stars, saying it "is definitely an idea whose time has come".

Did You Know?

  • In Japan it was called Bust a Move, renamed abroad to avoid a trademark clash with Bust-A-Move, the Western name of Puzzle Bobble.
  • The Western release removed Hiro's cigarette and changed a hip flask into a soda can.
