Overview

The Settlers (1993) is Volker Wertich's Blue Byte economy game, in which carriers move goods along roads to build a working settlement and an army.

Deep Dive

Serfs carry goods along roads, and placing flags adds more carriers to speed things up. Territory grows by building military buildings near the border, which knights garrison and use to attack the enemy. There are 30 missions and a free-play mode.

Developer Story

Wertich, its designer and programmer, turned the idea from a god game into an economic simulation. It came out on the Amiga in Germany in June 1993 and on MS-DOS in 1994, and sold over 400,000 copies by 1998. Critics praised the economy but not the combat.

Did You Know?

  • In North America it was sold as Serf City: Life is Feudal.
  • About 70,000 lines of 68000 assembly were written before the graphics work began.
