Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together

1995 · Strategy RPG · SNES

Overview

Tactics Ogre (1995) is Yasumi Matsuno's Super Famicom tactical RPG, a dark political fantasy of ethnic conflict and civil war in the kingdom of Valeria, with branching paths and up to eight endings.

Deep Dive

Denim Powell is drawn into the ethnic conflicts of a civil war in the kingdom of Valeria, in what Matsuno called a "complex dark fantasy political tale". Battles are turn-based on a grid seen from a diagonal overhead view. The story splits into Law, Neutral and Chaos branches, and up to eight endings can be reached.

Developer Story

Yasumi Matsuno directed, wrote and designed the game, with character designs by Akihiko Yoshida and music by Hitoshi Sakimoto and Masaharu Iwata. A team of 15 to 16 people worked on it for two and a half years, and Quest released it in Japan on 6 October 1995. It sold more than 500,000 copies on the Super Famicom, and the PlayStation version reached North America in 1998.

Did You Know?

  • Denim's endings as king depend on a hidden algorithm, a version of Ogre Battle's Chaos Frame, which fans found by data mining in 2014.
  • Matsuno left Quest after finishing it and went on to make Final Fantasy Tactics (1997).
