Darkstalkers: The Night Warriors

1994 · Fighting · Arcade

Overview

Darkstalkers (1994) is Capcom's CPS II fighting game with a cast of classic monsters, which added air blocking and chain combos to the Street Fighter II system.

Deep Dive

Ten playable monsters, among them Demitri Maximoff, Morrigan Aensland, Felicia, Anakaris and Sasquatch, fight their way to the bosses Huitzil and Pyron. The game is built on the Street Fighter II system but adds air blocking, crouch walking and chain combos. Its Special meter drains over time unless the player spends it on a super move, and EX and ES moves are powered-up versions of special moves.

Developer Story

Yoshiki Okamoto produced it, with Junichi Ohno designing and Akira Yasuda drawing. Capcom released it in Japanese arcades on 12 July 1994, and it sold about 24,000 arcade units. Psygnosis converted it to the PlayStation in 1996, and Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge followed in 1995.
