Overview

Super Cobra (1981) is Konami's follow-up to Scramble, a scrolling shooter in which a fuel-hungry helicopter fights through caverns to a base and carries off its loot.

Deep Dive

The player flies a helicopter through caverns, using a laser and bombs against defences, tanks and UFOs. Fuel drains steadily and is topped up by destroying fuel tanks. After ten levels the helicopter reaches a base, which it must get through safely to carry off the loot.

Developer Story

Konami released Super Cobra in August 1981, with Stern distributing it in North America. Parker Brothers converted it to the Atari 2600, Atari 5200, ColecoVision, Intellivision and other systems, and the 2600 version won a Certificate of Merit at the 1983 Arkie Awards.

Did You Know?

  • It runs on the same arcade hardware as Scramble.
  • Stern built 12,337 cabinets in the US by October 1981, its third best-selling arcade game after Berzerk and Scramble.
