Road Rash (1994) on the 3DO is EA's motorcycle combat racer rebuilt for CD: video scenes and a soundtrack of real bands including Soundgarden.

Deep Dive

Road Rash on the 3DO keeps the series' formula — races along open roads where riders punch, kick and club each other off their bikes while dodging traffic and police — and dresses it up for CD. Filmed video sequences frame the races, and the soundtrack features licensed tracks from alternative rock bands, including Soundgarden and Therapy?, still a novelty for console games at the time. Races take place across five routes with increasingly powerful bikes.

Developer Story

EA developed Road Rash specifically to showcase 3DO capabilities, creating a version that exceeded the 16-bit originals in presentation.

Did You Know?

Road Rash on 3DO was one of the first games to feature licensed music from real contemporary bands on CD.
The 3DO version's live-action video sequences were produced separately and stored as compressed video on the disc.
