Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee

1997 · Platform / Puzzle · PlayStation

Overview

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee (1997) is a cinematic platformer in which Abe, a slave at a meat-packing plant, escapes and frees his fellow Mudokons using speech and possession instead of guns.

Deep Dive

Abe, a Mudokon slave at RuptureFarms, discovers that his species is about to become the factory's next meat product. He escapes and gains the power of the Shrykull to free his people, and rescuing at least 50 of the 99 Mudokons earns the good ending. Abe carries no firearms: he tiptoes, runs and crouches, throws meat, rocks and grenades, possesses Sligs to take control of them, and directs other Mudokons with GameSpeak commands. The game saves only at checkpoints.

Developer Story

Lorne Lanning directed the game at Oddworld Inhabitants, which he co-founded with Sherry McKenna, who shaped the story and GameSpeak. GT Interactive released it for the PlayStation on 18 September 1997. It had sold 3.5 million copies by 2012.
